Last week's running update and race report

Last week's training went well. The weather is cooling down and I am starting to reap the benefits of running and cycling through the heat all summer. Here is what I had scheduled and what I actually ran:

I ended up being about 10 miles short for the week. On Wednesday, I decided to take a random off night thinking that I would just make up the mileage on Thursday and Friday. Later that evening, I learned I had won an entry to The Terminator: A Run to Stop Diabetes. The race offered a half-marathon, so I decided to race the half instead of doing my easy long run on Sunday. This was my third half-marathon and I made it a goal to break 2 hours while pushing T. My last half (September 2012) was also with T and resulted in a 2:02:28 time. I was still kinda pissed off about not breaking 2 hours then, so I took the goal a little more seriously this time. I took the day off on Friday plus ate a little extra on Thursday night and Friday morning instead of loading up on food the night before.

I was feeling pretty good on Saturday morning. T was in a fairly good mood, despite getting up so early. She was scared of the port-a-potty and threw a fit when I tried to get her to wear a diaper, so I was a little worried that she might need to use the restroom while we were on the course. I lined up toward the front and decided to start out a little faster than usual and maintain the pace as long as possible to cushion my time in case I found myself with a toddler screaming for a potty.
Lining up- the kid in the front was fast!

The course was on the river trails. The half, 10K, and 5K all started at the same time.  I expected it to be somewhat crowded, but it really wasn't. I had plenty of room to pass people as needed or to let people pass me. We started out between a 7:30 and 7:45 pace, which is more like a 10K pace for me without the stroller. Once I got warmed up, we cruised along until the turnaround that was a little after mile 8. I had no idea that I could keep up that kind of pace for longer than 6 miles.

I was shocked to see I was in second place with two women close behind. After the turnaround point, we were running back into the wind. I tried to maintain a solid pace, but just couldn't do it for very long. By mile 10, I had slowed down to a 9 minute mile and was still struggling. The women behind me started to pass me one by one.

Toward the end of the race, the course turned and weaved through a small sidewalk before the home stretch. The path was down a hill and out of the wind, but it was very narrow and the grass was muddy. Passing was not possible, or at least would have been very difficult, with the stroller. I ended up behind someone that was running at the same pace as we were in the wind but I could not pass. Once we got back to the main path, I reclaimed a place or two but was still struggling with the wind. We finished with an overall time of 1:53:33, a new PR. I got 2nd in my age group and missed 1st by 5 seconds-boo!

T is never too thrilled to see a crowd of people.

Cool age group awards from Karl's Plaques!
I have the HITS marathon this upcoming weekend. I am also considering running the half on Saturday since I need a few more races to get my Landrunner series award. Either way, I'll be running easy this weekend. The 50K I'm focusing on is in three weeks, so my schedule is starting to ease up a bit. My race was originally supposed to be two weeks from the HITS marathon, so since it was pushed back a week I'll have to refigure how much to run during the weeks between. My main focus is going to be to take it easy, not get hurt, and try not to gain weight during the taper.
